Solution: Winnowing: The process of separating heavier and lighter components of a mixture by wind or by blowing air is called winnowing. This method is used by farmers to separate lighter husk particles from heavier seeds of grain.

The breeze blows away the chaff, while the grains fall down almost vertically. The chaff from a heap at a little distance from the heap of grains . This is process is known as winnowing. Examples are paddy (rice) and wheat .
What mixtures can be separated by winnowing?
(i) Sand and husk: Mixture of sand and husk can be separated by winnowing. This method of separation is used to separate the lighter particles from the heavier particle of a mixture by blowing wind.
