Sprockets are used in bicycles, motorcycles, tracked vehicles, and other machinery either to transmit rotary motion between two shafts where gears are unsuitable or to impart linear motion to a track, tape etc.

Do I need Webpacker?

New Rails apps are configured to use webpack for JavaScript and Sprockets for CSS, although you can do CSS in webpack. You should choose Webpacker over Sprockets on a new project if you want to use NPM packages and/or want access to the most current JavaScript features and tools.

Where are chain and sprockets used?

Automotive engines use chains and sprockets to drive and synchronize camshafts with crankshafts. Often, these are multiple sprockets driving double- or triple-wide roller chainsets. Motorcycles use chains and sprockets for primary and final drives.
