On higher volume roadways the plows usually operate 24 hours a day when the conditions warrant. There are times, however when hours need to be reduced to give operators the opportunity to rest. On lower volume highways, roadways are usually plowed between 4 a.m. and 10 p.m., when conditions warrant.

Plows travel slowly, usually 25-30 miles per hour or less. Begin slowing down as soon as you see a snowplow. The most common crashes are motorists hitting the rear ends of snowplows. Stay well behind the snowplow.

Snowplows are also required to pull over every 5 to 8 kms, or when it is safe to do so allowing traffic to pass safely. On multi-lane roads, operators will move to the right and slow down, allowing traffic to pass.
