Should Bay Trees Be Pruned?

Bay trees are large, attractive trees with dense, shiny foliage. Bay tree pruning is not strictly necessary for the health of the tree, but the trees readily accept light or severe pruning, including pruning bay trees into topiary shapes.

How do you prune a bay tree?

Bay Tree Pruning

To keep the tree healthy trim back any new shoots and inward-facing buds. Bay trees tend to grow quickly, so may need additional pruning in summer to maintain a good shape. In summer, pinch back the tips of any stems that have grown too long, to limit vertical growth and encourage fruiting side shoots.

When should you trim a bay tree?

The best time to prune you bay tree is in late spring through to mid summer. Cut away any dead or damaged leaves to a healthy bud which is facing in the direction you want the stem to grow. Cut to shape in exactly the same way.
