Today, ringed-neck pheasants have been introduced in 40 of the 50 states. The ring-necked pheasant is South Dakota's state bird, one of only three U.S. state birds that are a non-native species. In captivity, ring-necked pheasants can live 11 to 18 years. In the wild, their average lifespan is 3 years.
Are pheasants good pets?
They are popular and colorful game birds of many different varieties. Named after their specific native homelands in Asia, pheasant varieties include the most common, the Chinese ringneck; the domesticated Golden; and the Mongolian, Szechwan, and Japanese.
Where do wild pheasants sleep?
All pheasants roost on a perch at night out of choice. As this is an anti-predator action, the pheasant's natural behaviour is to get as high as possible away from the reach of most predators. In an aviary, they usually want to roost on the highest possible vantage point.
