The mushroom fruits in hardwood leaf litter under Live Oak trees and near Cedar/Juniper Ash trees in Central Texas. These mushrooms are a saprotrophic species, growing on leaf litter, recycling nutrients back to the soil. Blewits have a standard “mushroom” shape: simple cap, a thick, stocky stalk, tight gills.
Are all Blewits edible?
Edibility. Both wood blewits and field blewits are generally regarded as edible, but they are known to cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. This is particularly likely if the mushroom is consumed raw, though allergic reactions are known even from cooked blewits.
How do I identify a wood blewit?
The wood blewit displays a smooth, lilac-blue cap that turns brownish with age. It starts off convex, but gradually becomes wavy or depressed. The stem is bluish-lilac and covered with small fibres, and the gills are lilac, fading to buff, and attached at the stem. This fungus smells fruity and perfumed.
