Do Grass Trees Flower?

Grass trees may take several years to flower. Flowers form on a spear-like spike, which can be up to 4m long! Flowers are arranged in a spiral up the spike, and produce a great amount of nectar, attracting a wide variety of insects, birds and mammals.

How do I get my grass tree to flower?

Flower spikes are often produced after fires, when the plant's growth is stimulated by the ash on the ground. Fire burns out the old foliage from the base of the plant but you can mimic that by having a small, cool fire in winter (if it's safe) or watering with smoke-infused water to stimulate flower production.

How do I identify my grass tree?

Most Grass Trees have long slim leaves which can be up to 60cm long. As the old leaves dry out and die they form a thick skirt at the top of the trunk. The trunk itself is made up of dried out leaf bases. In some species, the trunk may be underground.
