The ULEZ is central to the Mayor of London's plans to improve Londoners' health. It will clean up the city's toxic air, which leads to the early deaths of thousands of people every year. Most vehicles driving in the ULEZ must meet tight emission standards or pay the daily charge.
Who started ULEZ?
Plans for an ultra–low emissions zone were under consideration since 2014 under Mayor Boris Johnson. In February 2017, Mayor Sadiq Khan announced plans to expand the Ultra Low Emission Zone in April 2019 beyond Central London, one year ahead of schedule.
When was the ULEZ introduced?
The ULEZ started on Monday 8 April 2019 covers the same central London area as the Congestion Charge. It affects lots more vehicles than the LEZ, including all cars and motorcycles.
