Melanin is produced by specialized cells (melanocytes) that are scattered among the other cells in the deepest layer of the outer layer of the skin called the basal layer. After melanin is produced, it spreads into other nearby skin cells.
How does skin pigmentation develop?
The hyperpigmentation is a direct result of an increased level of a hormone in your body that results in increased melanin synthesis. Excessive sun exposure can also cause an increase in melanin.
Does skin pigmentation go away?
Keep in mind that hyperpigmentation does not always fade. Even with treatment, some hyperpigmentation will be permanent. Without any treatment at all, it can take 3 to 24 months to see improvement. It really depends on the severity of darkened skin and how much the hyperpigmentation covers.
