Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a procedure to remove tissue from inside your uterus. Health care providers perform dilation and curettage to diagnose and treat certain uterine conditions — such as heavy bleeding — or to clear the uterine lining after a miscarriage or abortion.

Why would someone need a D&C?

Remove tissue in the uterus during or after a miscarriage or abortion or to remove small pieces of placenta after childbirth. This helps prevent infection or heavy bleeding. Diagnose or treat abnormal uterine bleeding.

What is a curette used for?

Curettes. Curettes are used primarily for the treatment of benign or low-grade malignant tumors and for debulking tumors prior to Mohs micrographic surgery. They come in many handle styles with either round or oval heads of varying sizes from 1 mm to 9 mm (Fig. 4.8).
