Who Should Exemplify British Values?

All staff and board members are expected to exemplify British values including: democracy, the rule of law, individual freedom, tolerance and mutual respect of other faiths and beliefs. The Guidance is clear that this includes compliance with the Equality Duty to prevent discrimination and promote equality.

Do volunteers need to exemplify British values?

The Prevent duty guidance requires that:

they exemplify British values of “democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs” into their practice.

How can you demonstrate British values in your workplace?

Mutual respect and tolerance
  1. Encourage and explain to children about the importance of tolerant behaviours, such as sharing and respecting each other's opinions.
  2. Promote diverse attitudes and challenge stereotypes, for example, by sharing stories that reflect and value the diversity of children's experiences.
