Though you can't see them, amoebas are everywhere. They live in soil, ponds, lakes, forests and rivers. If you scoop up a handful of dirt in the woods, it will probably contain hundreds of thousands of amoebas.

amoeba, also spelled ameba, plural amoebas or amoebae, any of the microscopic unicellular protozoans of the rhizopodan order Amoebida. The well-known type species, Amoeba proteus, is found on decaying bottom vegetation of freshwater streams and ponds. There are numerous parasitic amoebas.

Where do most amoeba live?

The ameba can be found in:
  • Bodies of warm freshwater, such as lakes and rivers.
  • Geothermal (naturally hot) water, such as hot springs.
  • Warm water discharge from industrial plants.
  • Geothermal (naturally hot) drinking water sources.
  • Swimming pools that are poorly maintained, minimally-chlorinated, and/or un-chlorinated.
