Currently, unlike many other heath professions (e.g. medicine, nursing), PSW is not a regulated profession in the Province of Ontario. If enacted, the PSW Act will establish a new corporation called the Health and Supportive Care Providers Oversight Authority (the "Authority").
Is PSW a regulated profession?
As you know, Personal Support Worker is not a regulated profession in Ontario. There is no governing body, like the College of Nurses for the nursing profession. PSW jobs in long-term care facilities must follow the rules and regulations set forth by the government.
Why are PSW not regulated in Ontario?
Unlike most other health care workers in Ontario, PSWs are not a regulated health care profession, meaning there is no governing body which sets standards for the skills and knowledge needed to practice as a PSW, and the services they can provide.
