Sometimes simply draining the fluid doesn't help relieve pain. At this point, the orthopedic doctor may elect to remove some or all of the inflamed bursa. If the doctor removes only part of the bursa, there is a chance it will grow back to its normal size.
Does bursa grow back after bursectomy?
In a bursectomy the bursa is cut out either endoscopically or with open surgery. The bursa grows back in place after a couple of weeks but without any inflammatory component.
Can bursitis come back after surgery?
Chronic bursitis can go away and come back again. Acute bursitis can become chronic if it comes back or if a hip injury occurs. Over time, the bursa may become thick, which can make swelling worse.
