When to Pick Walnuts?

Harvest walnuts when they fall to the ground. Native nuts come into maturity September through October. Collect nuts as soon as possible to avoid mold. Hulls soften naturally over time, allowing easy access to the nut.

How do you know when walnuts are ready to pick?

To determine if your nuts are ready for harvest, crack a few open. The nuts should show browning of the membrane and loosening of the hull. Take your nut samples from as high up in the tree as possible since those that are at this height ripen latest.

Are walnuts ripe when they fall off the tree?

The walnut harvest season in California typically runs from late August through late November. Once the outer green hull of the walnut begins to dry and split (as pictured), the nuts are ready for harvest.
