Our own birds wander, but do not really migrate properly. However, ringing has shown regular movements from countries around the North Sea and Baltic into Britain for the winter. One has even reached us from Russia and several from Poland, though Norway, Sweden and Finland are their usual points of origin.
Where do goldcrests go in the winter?
British breeding goldcrests don't usually leave our shores, but they are known to move around within the country. Juveniles will disperse locally and some Scottish birds will move south of the border for the winter months. However, these minute birds have been recorded as travelling even further.
Where can you find goldcrests?
Coniferous woodland or parks with large mature trees are the best places to see goldcrests, but they range around in flocks of other small birds during autumn and winter.
