Why Is Lanai So Dry?

Why Is Lanai So Dry?

The weather on Lanai is regularly warm and dry. Because of its location, the island does not receive as much rainfall as the rest of Hawaii. Pack casual clothing and a light jacket or sweater since the weather is cooler at higher elevations.

How does Lanai get water?

Ground water, the lifeblood of Lanai is scarce. Lanai City obtains some of its water supply by a tunnel from gravel in Maumalei Gulch. This water apparently rises from the dike complex in this gulch. The rest of the supply comes from a recently constructed shaft tapping the dike complex not far downstream.

Does Lanai have fresh water?

Two deep-water wells were drilled on Lanai to provide enough fresh water to the island. The wells and two custom-made pumps capable of pumping 300 gallons per minute permitted the installation of toilets, showers, and laundry facilities in all worker homes.
