Platelets and breast cancer
An increased risk of thrombosis as well as increased platelet activation has been observed for decades in women with breast cancer, but until recently, these clinical observations have been considered a paraneoplastic phenomenon [2–6].

Cancer incidence increased with increasing platelet count, exceeding 3% in subjects with a platelet count of 375–399 × 109/l, and being consistently higher in men than in women. Baseline platelet levels may be higher or benign causes of raised platelets more likely, in women than in men.
