Midwives (and OB-GYNs) deliver babies and are responsible for the health and well-being of their patients.
Do midwives deliver babies or doctors?
A midwife is not a doctor, so there are instances when you may need to see a doctor who specialises in caring for women in maternity, called an obstetrician. For low-risk mothers, midwives will handle most of the care and will usually facilitate the birth if there are no complications.
Can a midwife deliver a baby without a doctor?
Uncomplicated, routine births do not generally require the presence of a doctor in addition to a well trained midwife. Doctors tend to anticipate and manage any complications that may arise during delivery.
