The woman's ovaries make most estrogen hormones, although the adrenal glands and fat cells also make small amounts of the hormones.
Where is estrogen produced and released?
Estrogens are produced primarily by the ovaries. They are released by the follicles on the ovaries and are also secreted by the corpus luteum after the egg has been released from the follicle and from the placenta.
Does your body still produce estrogen without ovaries?
Until menopause, the ovaries make most of your body's estrogen. When your ovaries are removed (oophorectomy) during a hysterectomy, your estrogen levels drop. Estrogen therapy (ET) replaces some or all of the estrogen that your ovaries would be making until menopause.
