The Eastern Sierra is a region in California comprising the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada, which includes Mono and Inyo Counties.
Where are the Eastern Sierras?
The eastern Sierra stretches from Lone Pine in the south to the Nevada line in the north and contains many of the Sierra's most awe inspiring settings. From the highest mountain in the lower U.S., Mount Whitney to the eastern entrance to Yosemite National Park, this side of the sierra is truly remarkable.
How are the Eastern and Western Sierra different and why?
The western and eastern Sierra Nevada have substantially different species of plants and animals, because the east lies in the rain shadow of the crest. The plants and animals in the east are thus adapted to much drier conditions.
