The correlations between tektite strewn-fields and terrestrial impact craters are numerous and impressive. Ivory Coast tektites, for example, occur 300–1,600 km (180–960 miles) from the Bosumtwi Crater in Ghana; and the formation of both the tektites and the crater has been dated at 1.3 million years ago.
How is tektite created?
The impact of large meteorites with the surface of the Earth provides enough energy to melt soils and rocks and disperse the molten ejecta of these impacts great distances, forming tektites.
Where does tektite come from?
Tektites have been found only in certain parts of the world, spread over large areas called strewn fields, mainly in low latitudes. The three major areas are south-east Asia (especially Thailand and the Philippines), Australasia; Caribbean-North America; and Ivory Coast, West Africa.
