Stepper motors are used every day in both industrial and commercial applications because of their low cost, high reliability, high torque at low speeds and a simple, rugged construction that operates in almost any environment. The rotation angle of the motor is proportional to the input pulse.
Why do we need stepper motors?
By energizing each phase in sequence, the motor will rotate, one step at a time. With a computer controlled stepping you can achieve very precise positioning and/or speed control. For this reason, stepper motors are the motor of choice for many precision motion control applications.
What do I need for a stepper motor?
Position control
The stepper motors require a digital circuit to move. Usually an Arduino board, or a more advance controller. But there is no way of creating a simple circuit to control a stepper motor. That is the reason why they are very well adapted to robotics.
