Grommets are typically used to reinforce holes in leather, cloth, shoes, canvas and other fabrics. They can be made of metal, rubber, or plastic, and are easily used in common projects, requiring only the grommet itself and a means of setting it.
What can I use grommets for?
Grommets are rings used to protect holes in thin materials like fabrics, sheet metal, and carbon fiber. Grommets or eyelets are used so that wires, rope, or cords can be put through your material without tearing through or misshaping the hole. Grommets are necessary when hole reinforcement is needed to prevent fraying.
Where do you insert a grommet?
The grommet portion (the male piece) is inserted from the right side into the cut hole so it pushes through to the back. The washer portion (the female piece) is placed over the portion of the grommet sticking out through the hole, like a little hat.
