Ocular albinism is a genetic disorder characterized by vision abnormalities in affected males. Vision deficits are present at birth and do not become more severe over time. Affected individuals have normal skin and hair pigmentation.

What are the symptoms of ocular albinism?

Signs and symptoms may include reduced coloring of the iris and retina (ocular hypopigmentation); foveal hypoplasia (underdevelopment); rapid, involuntary eye movements ( nystagmus ); poor vision; poor depth perception; eyes that do not look in the same direction ( strabismus ); and increased sensitivity to light.

Can ocular albinism be corrected?

Although there's no cure for the eye problems caused by albinism, there are a number of treatments, such as glasses and contact lenses, that can improve vision. A child with albinism may also need extra help and support at school.
