After we choose the filter size, we also have to choose the stride and the padding. Stride controls how the filter convolves around the input volume. In the example we had in part 1, the filter convolves around the input volume by shifting one unit at a time. The amount by which the filter shifts is the stride.
Why do we use strides?
Stride is a parameter that works in conjunction with padding, the feature that adds blank, or empty pixels to the frame of the image to allow for a minimized reduction of size in the output layer. Roughly, it is a way of increasing the size of an image, to counteract the fact that stride reduces the size.
What is the default stride in CNN?
2 Answers. From Conv1D, the default stride length is 1. Unless you have a concrete justification for another length, a stride length of 1 is usually appropriate. And after stacking several 1D convolutional layers, you might be reaching a layer in which the input dimensionality is smaller than the kernel size.
