What Is Knapped Stone?

Knapping is the shaping of flint, chert, obsidian or other conchoidal fracturing stone through the process of lithic reduction to manufacture stone tools, strikers for flintlock firearms, or to produce flat-faced stones for building or facing walls, and flushwork decoration.

What kind of rocks can be Knapped?

This type of rock is very fine grained or non-grained. The best rocks for flint-knapping are chert, flint, chalcedony, quartzite, jasper, and obsidian. Chert and flint are silica-rich rocks found throughout the Midwest in limestone and dolomite deposits.

Can granite be Knapped?

Granites, quartzites and basalts, which are not nearly as nice to knap as finer grained cherts and natural glasses, can be made into serviceable tools by pecking and grinding.
