Synthesis of triglycerides occurs in most cells but predominantly occurs in intestinal enterocytes for the delivery of dietary fatty acids to the body and hepatocytes of the liver for the delivery of endogenous fatty acids to, primarily, cardiac and skeletal muscle and to adipocytes.
Where are triglycerides synthesized?
The major sites of endogenous triglyceride synthesis are the liver and adipose tissue. In normal circumstances, hepatic triglyceride is secreted in very low density lipoproteins (VLDL).
Where does synthesis of triacylglycerol occur?
The biosynthesis of triacylglycerol occurs in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and involves acyl-editing of fatty acyl chains within the nitrogenous phospholipids of the ER.
