Which Vegetables Should Be Mulched?

Few jobs in the vegetable garden are as rewarding as mulching. Time spent applying mulch to peppers, tomatoes, squash, eggplant and other vegetables means extra dividends at harvest time. Mulch prevents loss of moisture from the soil, suppresses weed growth, reduces fertilizer leaching and cools the soil.

What plants should not be mulched?

DON'T mulch with rocks.

Especially avoid rocks around common foundation plants like azalea, hydrangea, and yews; these plants thrive in acidic soils (those with a pH level below seven), and rock mulch elevates soil pH, making an acidic soil more alkaline.

Is it good to mulch a vegetable garden?

Mulches help control weeds, prevent disease, conserve moisture, maintain consistent soil temperatures, enrich the soil and make the garden look good. And, a well-mulched garden can produce more vegetables than an unmulched garden due to its ability to reduce foliage and disease.
