Collect all matches and lighters and put them in one secure place. Choose a storage space high enough to be out of the reach of children, such as an upper cabinet. Locking them away is the safest measure, but it may not be practical for most families.

According to the TSA (Transportation Security Administration), you can carry butane or Zippo lighters in carry-on luggage. However, butane torch lighters (blue flame lighters/jet flame lighters) are prohibited items in the cabin under TSA security rules. If you are carrying a lighter in your pocket it must stay there.

So some recommend storing your BIC lighters in the freezer. I personally have too much in my freezer already. Frankly, most things would last longer in the freezer, so you have to pick and choose what goes in there. Like many things you're storing, BIC lighters are best stored in a cool, dry place.
