A crow funeral can happen at any time. Farmers bear witness after shooting unwanted crows in their fields. Powerline workers see them should an unlucky bird zap itself and drop. Occasionally, the funerals occur in a city park.

What is a crow funeral called?

The lifeless corpse belongs to a crow, and the dark-garbed group congregating nearby is a gathering of its fellow crows, sometimes referred to as a "murder." That name is particularly apt in this case, as murder is what holds their attention.

Do birds mourn their dead?

The BBC has published a study revealing that birds mourn the death of other birds. Jays, after finding a dead jay, will stop foraging and crowd around the body. The jays make sounds, likely to warn other jays in the area that there may be a predator on the loose.
