The pain can spread from the upper neck to the head (a neck-related headache) or from the lower neck to the shoulder blade or upper arm. Often there is restriction to move the neck and turn the head. Approximately 70% of people will experience an episode of neck pain at some point in their life.

How long does it take for wry neck to go away?

A wry neck (acute torticollis) often improves within 24-48 hours. However, it may take up to a week for the symptoms to go completely. Occasionally, the symptoms last longer or come back at a later time for no apparent reason. Most people who have had torticollis do not have is again in the future.

Can neck pain spread?

Neck pain may feel like a "kink," stiffness, or severe pain. Pain may spread to the shoulders, upper back, or arms, or it may cause a headache. Neck movement may be limited, usually more to one side than the other.
