Why Connections Between Neurons?

Why Connections Between Neurons?

Once the neurons reach their final location, they must make the proper connections so that a particular function, such as vision or hearing, can emerge. Neurons are cells within the nervous system that transmit information to other nerve cells, muscle, or gland cells.

Why do neurons need to connect?

Neurons are connected to each other and tissues so that they can communicate messages; however, they do not physically touch — there is always a gap between cells, called a synapse. Synapses can be electrical or chemical.

Why are connections between neurons important in the brain?

The links between nerve cells, called synapses, allow us to learn and adapt, and hold clues to conditions such as autism, schizophrenia and more. If you were to take a human brain and toss it in a blender — not that you should — the resulting slurry of cells wouldn't be special in the way that the human brain is.
