Who creates dictionary definitions?
They're called lexicographers. A lexicographer studies words and compiles the results into a dictionary. This is one of several words for a certain type of writer or editor. Just as a playwright writes plays and a poet writes poems, a lexicographer puts together dictionaries.
How do words get into the dictionary?
For a word to get into the dictionary, two main things must happen:
- It has to be in widespread use among a group of people. This means a lot of people are using the word and agree upon what it means, whether it's spoken or in writing.
- That word has to have staying power.
