Does Doxycycline Cover Beta Hemolytic Strep?

Doxycycline is a broad spectrum tetracycline antibiotic effective against some streptococcus species. Whilst not first line treatment, it can be used to treat strep throat and to prevent rheumatic fever. It should be used for no less than 10 days.

Is beta-hemolytic strep sensitive to doxycycline?

The maximum sensitivity to doxycicline was found in beta-hemolytic streptococci (85.4%) and the minimum sensitivity to that antibiotic was found in Coli bacteria (39.2%) and Strep. viridans (35.6%), which was superior to that with respect to the other tetracyclines.

What antibiotics treat beta-hemolytic strep?

Oral penicillin remains the drug of choice in most clinical situations, although the more expensive cephalosporins and, perhaps, amoxicillin-clavulanate potassium provide superior bacteriologic and clinical cure rates.
