Number Plates Explained
The number on the plate refers to the year and six-month period in which the vehicle was first registered; either March to August or September to February. The age identifier changes on 1st March and 1st September every year.

As of September 2021, the age identifier (third and fourth digit) will change from the current 21 to 71 on new cars registered from the September 1.
What will the reg plate be in 2021 in Ireland?
Any new registered vehicle in the first six months of the year will have a registration plate beginning with 201 DL... Any new vehicle in the second half of the year will have a 202 DL.... plate. For 2021, the registration number will begin 211 DL... followed by 212 DL... for the second half of the year.
