Burrowing Owls are not dangerous. They will not intentionally attack a human being. The most important thing to remember is never walk or stand on top of the burrow itself! Owl burrows can extend for up to 10 feet in any direction.
Are burrowing owls aggressive?
Nest defense behaviors change relative to nest stage, becoming more confrontational and aggressive towards human intruders once eggs have hatched (Fisher et al. 2004). When harassed by song birds, owls react by escaping to another perch or burrow mound.
What do you do if you see a Burrowing Owl?
If the burrowing owl needs to be brought to a wildlife hospital, keep it in a cardboard box with a lid in a warm, dark, and quiet place until you can bring it to your local wildlife hospital. DO NOT FEED OR HANDLE WILD ANIMALS.
