The Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant, also known as Plant Vogtle, is a two-unit nuclear power plant located in Burke County, near Waynesboro, Georgia, in the southeastern United States. It is named after a former Alabama Power and Southern Company board chairman, Alvin Vogtle.
How does Plant Vogtle work?
Plant Vogtle generates heat with the use of ceramic pellets made of uranium. The uranium ore is mined, processed, enriched and formed into cylindrical fuel pellets.
How much power does Vogtle produce?
The Vogtle Electric Generating Plant is spread across 3,200 acres around the Savannah River. It includes units 1 and 2, which became operational in 1987 and1989 respectively. Units 1 and 2 have a combined capacity of 2,450MW, which provides sufficient electricity for 600,000 homes.
