The sound of hissing is made when cats force air through their tongue while it is arched upward toward the center of the mouth. A puff of air is released as a cat hisses. Generally, while hissing, a cat will also arch their body, pull back their lips, and flatten their ears against the head.
Where do cats get hissing from?
When a cat feels threatened, they'll release a burst of air through their mouth, and it's this burst of air that makes a hissing sound.
Should you hiss back at a cat?
You should not hiss at your cat as it will scare the little pet and will eventually scared of coming in front of you. Movement, eye contact, tail and head bumps, and hissing are all ways cats communicate. When you mimic your cat's language, they'll notice when they're doing anything wrong sooner.
