Construction began on the KRS Dam in 1911 using traditional stone masonry and a lime-pozzolan mortar to act as a binder. Over the years, vegetation has grown within the mortar and significant “sweating” has accumulated in the body of the dam.
Who constructed KRS?
Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV Maharaj of Mysore constructed the dam during famine despite the critical financial condition in State. It was after him that the dam was named. One of the architects of the dam was Chief Engineer of Mysore M. Visvesvaraya.

Named after Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, the KRS dam was built by the chief engineer of Mysore, Sir M. Visvesvaraya, under his rule. The KRS dam was built in 1924 across the Cauvery river, near the conjunction of three rivers, namely Cauvery, Hemavathi and Lakshmana Theertha.
