Supportive communication skills means:
- Listen to what is being said rather than offer advice/guidance.
- Show interest by looking at the person, nodding agreement.
- Allow the person time and space to talk.
- Check your understanding by summarising and feeding back, or ask for clarification/more information.
What is evaluative communication?
Evaluative communication expresses judgment of the listener, or his or her actions. To be an effective constructive communicator, we should objectively describe problems rather than speak in an evaluative manner.
What is factual communication?
Factual communication includes reporting what you've read in a textbook, what you've studied for a test, showing pictures of your children, and exchanging biographical information about yourself. Factual communication is relatively safe and most do this well.
