More commonly a squint will develop a little later in your child's life often between the ages of 18 months and four years old. If you notice that your child appears to have a squint, it's important to have this checked by an optometrist (optician). Children are entitled to a free NHS eye test.
Can squint develop later in life?
Some people are born with a squint and others develop one later in life. Sometimes they run in families. In children, a squint is often caused by the eye attempting to overcome a vision problem, such as: short-sightedness – difficulty seeing things that are far away.
How early can a squint be detected?
By age of onset: Most squints develop at some time in the first three years of life. Some develop in older children and in adults. Squints that develop in children usually have different causes to those that develop in adults.
