During Past Tense or Present Perfect?

The words for, since, and during in English are used with certain verb tenses, specifically present perfect, present perfect continuous and past continuous (although they can be used with other tenses as well).

Is during past or present tense?

After a verb that focuses on an activity, "during" is used to indicate a period or range of time for the activity. The meaning of the verb expresses a durative action or state. Using present perfect tense with "during" is awkward. We had a great time during our stay there.

Where do we use during during?

We use during to talk about when something happens in relation to another event which lasts for a period of time. We use a noun after during. Note: we do not use during to talk about the length of time or the start or end point of the event. I went skiing several times during the winter.
