Erlestoke House, which the prison is built around, was designed and built by Joshua Smith MP, who was the Member of Parliament for Devizes. The house was built between 1780 and 1810. There is a single-storey lodge house, which dates from the 19th century that stands at the entrance to the grounds of the house.
