Moose are not normally aggressive; however, they can become aggressive when they are harassed by people, dogs, and traffic, or when hungry and tired, especially in winter when they must walk through deep snow. Sometimes people throw snowballs at moose or approach them too closely for safety.
What do you do if you encounter a moose?
Keep a safe distance and a watchful eye. If the moose becomes aggressive and charges, run. Don't stand your ground or try to intimidate it. If possible, place a tree or other large object between you and the moose.
What happens if a moose sees you?
As a general rule, if you are causing the moose to change its behavior in any way, you are too close. Even if the moose appears undisturbed by your presence, you must still be able to evade the animal should it abruptly charge you.
