What Is a Firebrat Insect?

What Is a Firebrat Insect?

The firebrat is a small hexapod, in the order Zygentoma. Firebrats prefer higher temperatures and require some humidity, and can be found in bakeries and near boilers or furnaces. They feed on a wide variety of carbohydrates and starches that are also protein sources such as dog food, flour and book bindings.

Are firebrats harmful?

Firebrats are a nuisance pest and are not dangerous; they do not bite, sting, and aren't known to transmit any diseases to people. Firebrats can, however, cause damage to personal items and can contaminate food, so they should be eliminated from a home or other property as quickly as possible.

Do firebrats bite humans?

While they don't bite humans or spread disease, a firebrat does feed on and contaminate household materials. This includes stored foods, like cereal and flour, along with anything that contains sugar or protein. Also, firebrat bugs are known to damage books, papers, and other stored paper-related items.
