When Do Mulloway Breed?

Breeding and migration
After six years they reach sexual maturity at 70-80cm. Mulloway are long-lived with some fish reaching 30 years or more and growing to two metres. In September/October some big mulloway move back into the Swan River to build up energy for spawning and return after spawning in December/January.

What size do mulloway breed?

In NSw, size at 50% maturity for males was estimated at 51 cm (2+ years of age) and for females at 68 cm (3+ years of age). Mulloway are known to spawn in summer in Australian waters.

How long does it take for mulloway to grow?

Average size and age at which mulloway attain sexual maturity in NSW is estimated at 51 cm and at 2+ years for males (Fig 42a) and 68 cm at 3+ years for females (Fig 42b). In South and Western Australia, mulloway do not become sexually mature until they are approximately 70 - 80 cm (approx. 4 kg) and 5 to 6 years old.
