How to Check Dilation?

Check for dilation.
Try to insert the tips of your fingers into your cervix. If one fingertip fits through your cervix, you're considered one centimeter dilated. If two fit, you're two centimeters dilated. If there's additional space in the opening, try to estimate how many fingertips would fit to determine dilation.

Can I check myself for dilation?

You can check yourself—but it's still crucial to work with an expert throughout your pregnancy. And if you're checking your own cervix in preparation of a home birth, you should also be working with a certified professional midwife who's trained in handling emergencies.

How do they check if you dilated?

To measure dilation your doctor or nurse will perform a cervical check by inserting two fingers into your vagina and feeling your cervix with their finger tips. Because dilation is a measurement estimated with fingers it can vary if a different nurse or doctor checks you.
