Johnny Darters are found mostly in areas with little stream current, over a bottom that is gravel or sand, and in lakes along firm shorelines. They have also been found in weedy areas and rocky riffles.
Where can I find darters?
Visit the waters of Virginia and West Virginia's upper Kanawha River Basin, and you might find yourself witnessing flashes of underwater rainbows. With their vibrant teal, red and orange colors, candy darters are a small freshwater fish native to the Gauley, Greenbrier and New River watersheds.

What Eats Them? The Johnny darters are eaten by many of the predatory fish that share their habitat. Some examples are burbot, lake trout, smallmouth bass, walleyes, and yellow perch.
