Gradually, however, opposition grew. Tithes were repealed in France during the Revolution (1789), without compensation to tithe holders. Other countries abolished certain kinds of tithes and indemnified the holders. By 1887 the tithe had been brought to an end in Italy.
Why was tithes abolished?
In consideration for Levites duty at the temple, the other tribes of Israel were commanded to pay TITHES at the temple TO SUPPORT THE LEVITES. When Christ died on the cross, the law / process of offering sacrifices became obsolete. This meant that the Levites were no longer required to serve in the temples.
When were tithe rent charges abolished?
In 1836, a procedure was provided for the commutation of all tithes into tithe rentcharges either by agreement or by compulsion, and in fact almost all tithes have been so commuted. Tithe rentcharge has now been extinguished and it is no longer possible to commute tithes into tithe rentcharge.
